Characters: Kotetsu T. Kaburagi and Barnaby Brooks, Jr.
Setting: Death City, Nevada; game: [community profile] soul_campaign
Timeline: following a heart-to-heart

Two in the morning was a horrible time to be awake. Barnaby hadn't actually thought he would have fallen asleep at eleven, but he woke that same night feeling rather starved. Part of him just wanted to sleep; he felt so weary from the previous evening. But no matter how long he lay there and tried to sleep again, his stomach refused to silence.

Well... he was an adult, he could eat in the middle of the night if he wanted.

Sneaking into the kitchen, Barnaby used as few lights as possible, opting for the stove light instead of the room switch, and tried to keep the microwave from making too much noise by watching the time. After all, it would be rather odd if Kotetsu walked out to ind Barnaby roaming about the kitchen in only a pair of loose cotton pants. Plus, he didn't want to wake the older man; Kotetsu deserved his rest.

However, as Barnaby pulled the thrice-reheated plate from the microwave, he heard heavy footsteps reach the room. Kotetsu, adorning a pretty hideous case of bedhair, poked his head into the room. Amber eyes widened in surprise at finding the blonde awake at all. Barnaby noted that he still wore yesterday's outfit--had he just fallen asleep? "Oh... I almost thought someone broke in and was stealing all the beer," he said. But then he smiled, rubbing at the back of his head. "I'm still getting used to living with someone again. But anyway--are you okay?"

Barnaby nodded, holding up his plate. "Apparently my stomach wouldn't wait until morning."

Kotetsu nodded with a smile. "Guess you were dreaming about food." As Barnaby carried his plate to the table, Kotetsu fixed himself a glass of juice and slipped into the seat across from him.

"You don't have to wait for me," Barnaby remarked as he began to eat.

Kotetsu shrugged his shoulders. "I know. I want to."

Barnaby just shook his head, but he found himself smiling behind the spoon. Saying nothing else, he just ate. Kotetsu kept quiet as well, swishing the juice around in his cup. Oddly enough for the blonde, it felt peaceful in the little apartment. Barnaby's head felt heavy the longer he sat in the dim room, but the hunger was enough for him to continue scooping the soft grains into his mouth. Fried rice really was a nice meal for any odd hour, he noticed. As he finished, he noticed Kotetsu smiling at him.

"What?"

"Nothing... You done? Gonna go back to bed?"

"Yes, hopefully. You didn't have to wait up with me," he repeated himself. "If you're worried I'll do something drastic--"

"I'm not," the brunette said quickly. "I just wanted some juice. And sometimes it's nice having someone else around. Don't think of everything being so negative, Bunny! Sheesh, didn't we talk about this earlier? You're al--"

"Thank you."

"Eh?"

Barnaby smiled. "I said thank you. But old man, if you're having this much trouble hearing, we should look into hearing aids." And with that, he carried his plate to the sink; that could be cleaned later. Behind him, he could hear Kotetsu begin some whine, but he shook his head and tuned out most of it. Grabbing a clean cup for himself, he opened the fridge again.

Kotetsu stared, watching and wondering, and then he just laughed.

"Milk, Bunny?"

"It's Barnaby, and yes. Milk." With an annoyed stare, Barnaby took a sip of his drink.

"Bunny, you're such a kid! Who drinks a glass of milk before bed? How long have you done that?"

Barnaby ignored him until he finished half of his cup. "I've done this for as long as I can remember. Please stop laughing so stupidly."

Kotetsu silenced, until Barnaby finished his drink and set his cup in the sink. "Let me guess--you'll need someone to tuck you in next? You want a bedtime story? I could tell you some I used to tell Kaede."

"Old man, please go to bed." Barnaby pointed to the hall, and Kotetsu instinctively flicked on the light. With that, Barnaby turned off the stove light. The older hero grinned.

"Iiiiif you say so, l'il Bunny."

Barnaby almost punched him.for that one.
