Hello. I have an inquiry for you, if anyone might know the answer. Despite being here for a few months, I've been unable to discover one.

What exactly are the badges for? Outside of the new label of 'champion', do they serve any purpose?

Who cares about the badges, it's the money you get from winning that makes the gyms worth fighting.

Ah... So the fighting is essentially just for profit?

...I'm not quite certain I see the point in building the entire structure of the world around that.

I'm sure the natives are in it for the glory and honor and becoming the very best at monster fighting.

But I don't see the point in getting little trophies to prove it, so money it is. Better than working behind the counter at a store.

Well some of them let pokemon learn moves they wouldn't be able to normally. And you do get some money for them.

Also since the society revolves around pokemon fighting, it's probably a mark of status as well.

The badges allow you to use certain HMs to travel more efficiently, and they also give you a significant discount in all stores if you happen to be an official trainer. Of course, if you have no wish to aim for a full set, you can simply earn the ones used to enable Fly and Surf and borrow the HMs from someone else.

Ah... How much does one earn with those victories?

Learning more moves... Through the technical enhancements?

Enabling Fly and Surf? Could you elaborate, please?

Depends on the badge. The harder the fight's supposed to be, the more money you get for winning.

But even the first few gyms give you a lot.

That's right. Fly and Surf are two such HMs. As long as you own them, you can teach the associated moves to your Pokémon as often as you wish. But for them to be able to transport human passengers, you need certain badges. For example, the Zephyr badge allows flying Pokémon to take riders, while the HM for Fly itself can be won in either Cianwood or Saffron.

Several purposes...one of them I don't think people have mentioned yet is that the more badges you have, the higher the level is of Pokemon who will obey you...

I'll assume the others told you about the HMs, but did they mention the discounts you'd get from stores?

You'd have to ask someone who battles more. However they do it, having a badge allows the pokemon to learn a move.

It's utterly insane. I've been here for about three years and I'm still not used to it.

Battling... does seem quite beneficial in that case. I may have to try this out.

Yep. Especially traded Pokemon...because you weren't their original trainer. Of course, your own training style has to do with it too, but that's how it worked...

Oh, and if you're a trainer here, badges get you discounts in stores, I hear.

They need to convince people to travel and earn them, after all. Making them practical to have while on a journey makes that much simpler, though plenty of trainers would still earn them simply for the challenge.

Yeah. It's only a small percentage off for each badge, but they adds up. Combined with the default discount we get, you'll save a lot of money in the long term.

Like I said I'm still not used to the craziness. But I suppose I'm less surprised by it then I used to be.

Traded pokémon? I've been informed of some of the discounts, but I haven't heard of those... Is there a specific purpose of trading them?

I'd imagine so. I've noticed quite a few things in the shops around here... I guess buying some of them are rather useful to those along the routes.

Yep. If you're going on the road for a while, stocking up on Potions, Antidotes and Paralyze Heals is pretty important. A bottle or three of Repels, too, if you want to avoid encountering wild Pokemon.

It's quite the pleasant activity, too. Fighting as a team to obtain the badges and HMs, using them to see distant towns together... I do believe that is the reason why training Pokémon is so popular in this world.

Distant towns...? How far have you traveled with your team, if I may ask?

I'm familiar with a few of these, but - what exactly is a paralyze heal?

We've visited every city and town in both Johto and Kanto, along with most of the routes and caves. A few are still inaccessible to all trainers, but we look forward to seeing them sooner or later.

It's a spray-type medicine. You spray it on your Pokemon and they'll recover from their paralysis. Pretty useful if you get hit by a stray stun spore or a thunder wave.

Ah... I wasn't aware that such conditions or cures existed here, but that is very nice to know. Thank you.

I wonder where else there is to explore.

...Certain species were once not native to Johto or Kanto, before they somehow started appearing in the wild. They must have come from somewhere, and perhaps we'll someday have the chance to visit it.

You're welcomed! If there's an ailment, they usually have a cure for it in the PokeMart. So I'd recommend checking up on them and what can cure them, in case you're too far away from a Pokemon Center.

In the games, it was because they leveled up faster than usual ones...and also, you could get Pokemon you didn't have in your 'dex that way.
