What exactly are the badges for? Outside of the new label of 'champion', do they serve any purpose?

Who cares about the badges, it's the money you get from winning that makes the gyms worth fighting.

[And there's all that business about being able to use HMs but Envy's not helpful enough to tell him that!]

Well some of them let pokemon learn moves they wouldn't be able to normally. And you do get some money for them.

Also since the society revolves around pokemon fighting, it's probably a mark of status as well.

The badges allow you to use certain HMs to travel more efficiently, and they also give you a significant discount in all stores if you happen to be an official trainer. Of course, if you have no wish to aim for a full set, you can simply earn the ones used to enable Fly and Surf and borrow the HMs from someone else.

Several purposes...one of them I don't think people have mentioned yet is that the more badges you have, the higher the level is of Pokemon who will obey you...
